Utamaro Collection
Kitagawa Utamaro
12 works
Portraits from the pleasure districts of old Edo.
Utamaro made his name with the ōkubi-e — the large-headed portrait — bringing his sitters close enough that the print becomes a face rather than a costume. His subjects were the courtesans and teahouse waitresses of Edo’s pleasure districts, and he drew them as individuals at a time when convention did not require it.
