Mondarian Collection
Piet Mondrian
5 works
Dutch farms reduced, one study at a time, to a grid.
Mondrian did not begin with grids. He began with Dutch farms and windmills, and reduced them study by study until only the horizontals and verticals were left. Seeing the early work beside the late is seeing the argument being made rather than its conclusion.
About the artist
Piet Mondrian
Dutch, 1872–1944. Spent his last years in Manhattan, where the street grid and the jazz both turned up in the painting.
