Edo in rain Collection
Utagawa Hiroshige
12 works
The road to Edo in rain, snow and evening mist. Quiet, and good in a room.
Hiroshige travelled the Tōkaidō — the coast road between Edo and Kyoto — and came back with the series that defined Japanese landscape printing. What sets these apart is the weather. Snow falls on Kanbara, mist sits on the river at Mishima, and travellers hurry through both.
About the artist
Utagawa Hiroshige
Japanese, 1797–1858. The last great master of the ukiyo-e landscape. Van Gogh owned his prints and copied two of them in oil.
The works
Mostly landscape, with a few the other way up — it suits a screen mounted the usual way round, and Mirra can mat or skip the rest.
