Between roughly 1910 and 1925 a handful of painters worked out, more or less separately, that a picture did not have to be a picture of anything. Kandinsky arrived by way of landscapes that dissolve while you watch.
About the artist
Wassily Kandinsky
Russian, 1866–1944. Trained as a lawyer and took up painting at thirty. Taught at the Bauhaus until the Nazis closed it.
